Step House: Commercial Restoration, Rebuilding and Extension
This small hotel in Boris, Co. Carlow was originally a public house. The central Step House building itself is a protected structure, and is still extant and restored.
While the bedroom block, which is curved to take in views of the local mountains, appears to be the only new section of the building, in fact - apart from the Step House itself and the front wall of the ground floor of the building - all the rest is a rebuild, blended with the protected structure around it and the vernacular of the architecture of the village of Boris.
The client, James Cody, wanted to capture the feel of Sheen Falls in Kenmare, and desired a similar ambience and feel for his building. It now operates as a very successful hotel and wedding venue.
